I was talking to one of my client's moms today and in the course of conversation about the new Common core Curriculum, I had a chilling thought and I would like opinions on it as to whether you think I am right or wrong. This kid is doing my processing skills improvement program for their child for enhancement and an extra edge on fast work, but since Common Core came into their school, the amount of homework time has increased exponentially to the point that this child has no time for any after school activities including practicing my exercises, and I am being told that this is typical across the class since the new Common Core curriculum. I have also seen many articles about CC that talk about needing to use 114 steps in a math problem as opposed to 4 and stories about parents who are professional Engineers who are unable to decipher the logic and steps of this curriculum. It seems to me that 114 steps would take an excessive amount of time to finish and bog down an entire evening, leaving no time for family, friends, sports or other activities of someone's choice-maybe even sleep. Last, with the public school quality declines reported to me from clients over almost 30 years of practice over the last few decades, the growth of private services like mine for cognitive processing skills and Sylvan, Huntington and Kumon for academic tutoring and improvement, seems to have been very large. I don't have stats, but do have lots of subjective reports from my clients.
Is it possible that one purpose of Common Core might be to prevent kids from having time to do any other supplemental work that would increase their skills, their progress, and their abilities way past their peers in public school? A leveling out of access to extra paid services if you will. I have read in several places, that Common Core is there to even out the playing field between low achievers and high achievers. Somewhat like the income inequality argument that we have seen so much of lately. I may be interpreting this wrong, but I have read a lot about that. If you bog down the kids who had lots of extra time through better achievement, and money for other brain building activities like the training I do, with a ton of extra steps in their homework, does that not hold them back from excelling, having a competitive edge and being able to do the supplemental activities that can increase their potential?
It just struck me as interesting when my client's mom today told me that since Common Core, he has no time anymore for any after school activities, whether brain building, family, sports or social, as he is so bogged down with the amount of steps it takes. This is a common story from what I am reading. Since that is a huge difference from before, for him, I wondered about it. Sorry but I think that is disgusting as a well rounded person has lots more in their life than 114 steps for a Math problem.
